THE ART OF SHAVING

The Art Of Shaving

The average man will shave around 10,000 times during his life, there's no surprise it becomes a ritualistic part of a man's grooming process! In years gone by, men would visit their barber once a week to tidy up their beard.

Fathers would teach their sons the art of using a cut throat razor, straight razor or a blade and how to shave using a a shaving brush and soap. With only one blade (in comparison to today's disposable razors with 4 or 5 blades) shaving took longer, it was more of an art form and certainly more relaxed than most men shave today!

Today, cutthroat razor shaving is a luxury preserve of a handful of barbers across the country. Men who have cutthroat razor shaves are looking for a that perfect shave for a special event (maybe their wedding day) or simply to look the smartest they possibly can.

To introduce you to cutthroat shaving, here's our guide to how we do it:

Shaving oil is applied with the tips of the fingers in a circular motion to start to raise the beard.

A hot towel is then wrapped around the beard to open the skin pores, soften the beard and to help the shaving oil penetrate the skin, this is removed before it gets cold to keep the pores open and the beard soft.

Using a badger hair shaving brush, a rich shaving lather is applied using a circular, vigorous motion. This raises the beard and extracts any ingrown hairs.

A hot towel is applied again to warm the shaving cream and to help keep the face moist. After a few minutes, the hot towel is removed and shaving cream is again applied to the beard to prepare it for shaving.

The first shave uses a fresh, disposable cutthroat razor blade and goes with the grain of the beard. If necessary another hot towel is applied after the first shave.

Another layer of shaving foam is then applied using a hot brush and the beard is shaved against against the grain using another fresh, disposable blade. Once complete the remaining foam is removed and the final results admired by all!

Went here for my entire 2 years in Leeds, always a great haircut. Usually 3/4 barbers so never have to wait. Always super friendly, offer you tea/coffee/water and sometimes sweet food. Amazing value.

Elliott Booth

I have had a great experience there. They greeted me well and offered tea/coffee when I was waiting for my turn. Place was nice and clean so I will rate 5/5 for that too. Prices are good, you don't need to pay too much for hair cut. There is a street parking so you don't need to worry about parking. Also, you don't need an appointment to visit them. Even though it is quite popular and many people go there waiting time is less as they have 4-5 staff.
